A complete guide to pet regulations on light rail: travel with your pet without any hindrance

To ensure the smooth implementation of the trial program and the comfort and safety of all passengers, MTR has formulated a series of detailed regulations. FurryStory has compiled the following points for you to make sure you are fully prepared before taking your pet on the light rail:

Handbag Recommendation

Pets allowed

The trial program is currently limited to cats and dogs1 . This means that other pets, such as rabbits, birds or reptiles, are not currently eligible for the scheme1 . This restriction is intended to allow for more efficient management and evaluation of the effectiveness of the pilot program.

Pet Carrying Methods

Your pet must be placed in a pet-friendly bag or carrier at all times and the bag or carrier must be completely closed before entering the Light Rail station area1. This strict requirement is designed to protect the safety of other passengers and prevent pets from moving freely in the carriage. Even if it is just a short trip or you want to let your pet peek out, it is not allowed7 .

Pet bag size restrictions

To comply with MTR's luggage regulations, the total dimensions (length + width + height) of a pet carrier bag or backpack must not exceed 170 cm , and the length of any side must not exceed 130 cm2 . This regulation limits the size of pets that can be brought on board and directly affects the size of the pet bag you choose. Therefore, be sure to check the product size carefully when purchasing.

Pet bags are not allowed to be opened during the trip

You may not open your pet's carrier or carrier throughout your LRT journey, both inside the train and on the platform, until you have left the LRT vehicle and platform area1 . This regulation is to ensure that pets do not escape during driving and cause unnecessary danger or distress.

Pet travel permit

Every passenger who brings a pet on the Light Rail needs to purchase an electronic "Cat and Dog Pass" at HK $99 per month 1 . The pass will be available on the MTR Mobile app from April 11, 20251 . It should be noted that this pass is in electronic form, there is no physical version, and it needs to be purchased again every month. Additionally, pet owners will still need to pay for their own transportation1 .

Available time

Pets are only allowed on Light Rail 1 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays . This time restriction means that pets cannot travel on the light rail on weekdays.

Pick-up and drop-off locations

Passengers with pets may only board and exit light rail vehicles through the last door . If the train is a two-carriage train, this can be the last door 1 of the first or second car. This regulation helps manage the movement of pets within the carriage and reduce the impact on other passengers.

Position during ride

Passengers travelling with pets must remain in the rearmost compartment of the vehicle throughout the journey1. This applies even if your pet is very quiet.

Dogs not allowed on board

Large dogs weighing more than 20 kg , as well as "fighting dogs" or other "known dangerous dogs" as defined under Hong Kong law are not allowed to travel on Light Rail 1 . This regulation is to protect public safety.

Pet Owner Responsibilities

In addition to purchasing a pass for their pet, pet owners are also required to pay for their own fares1 .

Still hesitating? These features help you choose the ideal pet bag

If you haven’t found the style you’re looking for yet, here are a few key features to consider to help you make a smarter choice:

  • Lightweight and portable: Choosing a lightweight pet bag can reduce your burden when carrying it, especially when you need to walk a distance to reach or leave the light rail station.
  • Durable and easy to clean: Consider choosing a material that is wear-resistant and easy to clean, so that even if your pet accidentally soils the bag during travel, you can easily clean it up and keep it clean and hygienic.
  • Good ventilation: Good ventilation design is essential for pets who stay in enclosed spaces for a long time. Choose a pet bag with plenty of mesh vents to allow air to circulate and prevent your pet from overheating1 .
  • Secure closure: Make sure the pet bag has a secure closure, such as a zipper with a safety catch or a sturdy latch, to prevent your pet from accidentally escaping1 .
  • The right size: Choose a pet carrier that is the right size for your pet to stand, sit and lie down comfortably , subject to MTR size regulations2.

Tips: Tips for riding the light rail with your pet

To make your LRT journey more enjoyable for you and your pet, we have prepared some useful tips for you:

  • Get your pet used to the carrier in advance: A few days before your trip, get your pet familiar with the carrier or carrier at home. You can put in some of its favorite toys or treats to make it feel more comfortable. 1
  • Arrange for your pet to go to the toilet before traveling: Make sure your pet has finished defecating before going to the light rail station to reduce the possibility of accidents during the journey8 .
  • Prepare absorbent pads: Place absorbent pads or diaper pads at the bottom of your pet's bag to prepare for unexpected situations and keep the bag clean1 .
  • Arrive at the station early: Especially in the early stages of the pilot scheme, it is recommended that you arrive at the LRT station early to allow sufficient time to deal with any situations that may arise.
  • Consider the feelings of other passengers: During the journey, try to keep your pets quiet and avoid them making excessive noise and disturbing other passengers.
  • Prepare your pet pass: Make sure your electronic "Cat and Dog Pass" is ready in the MTR Mobile app so you can show it to MTR staff when needed1.
  • Bring cleaning supplies: Bring some basic cleaning supplies, such as wet wipes and trash bags, so you can clean up in time if an accident occurs8 .
  • Know your pet’s temperament: Before deciding to take your pet on the LRT, consider whether they are comfortable travelling in a potentially crowded and noisy public environment7.
